According to the UNFPA, six months of lockdowns could result in an additional 31 million cases of gender-based violence.

Coming together as women to support women in this crisis is critical.

We stand #TogetherForHer.

Together for Her is a call to action to stand in solidarity with women and girls around the world by deploying funds and supporting the global response against domestic violence during the time of COVID-19.

The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP), CARE and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) have come together to amplify the dire need for resources. Charlize and CTAOP provided a lead gift, and Charlize called upon women everywhere to join forces and help shine a light on this critical effort.

Through our collective voices, we stand in solidarity to show that we are stronger together; we are Together for Her.

As the spread of COVID-19 has forced people indoors, life has become even more dangerous for women experiencing domestic violence, especially for those who are most marginalized. Not only are women experiencing this violence, but many children, who are also home from school, are witnessing and potentially experiencing domestic violence themselves.

Supporting Women and Girls

Along with their rallying cry, Charlize and CTAOP have committed $1 million to COVID-19 relief efforts, with $500,000 specifically designated towards Together for Her, supporting women and girls against domestic violence. This particular gift will support efforts in the United States and in Charlize’s home country of South Africa.

EIF is making grants to U.S.-based organizations providing safe accommodation/shelter, case management, psycho-social support and counseling, helplines, crisis intervention, legal services, community-based prevention and advocacy work to address intimate partner violence, and additional resources for women and children experiencing domestic violence.

Spearheading Together for Her’s international efforts, CARE will direct funds to support programs that protect women and girls and prevent gender-based violence in the 100 countries where the organization works. CARE ensures the staff and community leaders have the GBV referral services information they need, that women are leaders and active participants in making decisions about COVID-19, keeps attention on the issue through advocacy and virtual events, and keeps CARE’s response in context to ensure understanding of the local GBV risks and how to respond to them.

What Is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence does not discriminate. Anyone of any race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender can be a victim – or perpetrator – of domestic violence.
