CARE International is a global confederation of 16 member organizations – Austria, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, India, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Thailand, United Kingdom, and United States – working together to end poverty.
Founded in the United States in 1945 after World War II, CARE first sent food aid and basic supplies in the form of CARE Packages to war-torn Europe – where millions were in danger of starvation and these goods were either heavily rationed or impossible to find. Some 100 million CARE packages reached people in need during the next two decades, first in Europe and later in Asia and other parts of the developing world.
CARE’s support was extended to Japan in 1948 and, during the next eight years, 10 million Japanese received $2,900,000 (US) worth of aid. CARE’s work continued to extend to other areas in need of aid, such as parts of Asia, South America and Africa. As the activity base expanded, CARE’s name changed from the original “The Cooperative for American Remittance to Europe” to “The Cooperative for American Relief Everywhere,” and then to “The Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere.”
CARE ended its post-war aid to Japan once Japan began to show signs of recovery. Thirty-four years later in 1987, Japan found itself in a position to help those suffering from poverty around the world and CARE International Japan was inaugurated and accepted as a member of the CARE International network.
