Powered by the CARE-WWF Alliance, Sowing Change is a livelihood-to-leadership initiative that provides access to resources and skills for young women to generate income through nature-based enterprises and lead their communities to identify and implement local solutions to climate-induced challenges.

About Sowing Change

The initiative will begin in Eastern and Southern Africa in 2023, with programs in Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia. Focusing on countries that share landscapes and challenges, Sowing Change will co-create with local implementing partners, strengthening their expertise and building their knowledge and trusted relationships with communities. Sowing Change will expand to other regions of the world in 2024.

The power of women

Women are changemakers. As the water gatherers, food producers, and stewards of natural resources, women have intimate insight into the real effects of our changing climate. When equipped with the proper knowledge, resources, and opportunities, they will restore, regenerate, and re-envision how communities mitigate and adapt to climate change, while helping their families adapt along the way.

The importance of nature-based enterprises

Nature-based enterprises (NBEs) address two critical needs: 1) they provide a means for earning money for household needs - to put food on the table, pay for health care, support children’s education and cover other day-to-day expenses through businesses that help, not hurt, the environment; and 2) they use nature as a core element of the income-generating product or services – either by growing or restoring natural resources in a sustainable way or participating in the stewardship of sustainable nature-based solutions. As a bottom line, a nature-based enterprise must contribute positively to biodiversity and ecosystem services.

The Sowing Change Vision

Women worldwide lead their communities in developing nature-based solutions that support landscape restoration, build the green growth economy, increase climate change resilience, and become part of a global climate movement.
