CARE Statement on Hurricane Helene’s Landfall

September 27, 2024 – “Our hearts go out to all who have been impacted by Hurricane Helene, as well as those still in its path. We are especially concerned for vulnerable communities who will suffer the most amid the enormous challenges they will face in the days, weeks and months ahead. So many will struggle to meet their basic needs.

CARE is mobilizing our CARE Partner Network in affected states to identify needs and determine how best we can help. The CARE Partner Network is a group of local and national organizations and grassroots groups with whom we work following disasters and other emergencies in the U.S. Through CARE’s support, these partners will be able to provide additional emergency cash assistance, food, water and other critical supplies to those who need it most.

Helene made landfall last night in Florida’s Big Bend as a catastrophic Category 4 hurricane, bringing life-threatening storm surges (up to 20 feet in some areas), wind gusts of up to 140 mph, and torrential rains. The damage we’ve seen via news reports and social media so far has been significant and heartbreaking. Helene’s impacts extend well beyond the Florida coast with millions across multiple states (including Georgia and South Carolina) experiencing severe weather and power outages.

CARE is committed to supporting our partners so they can help and uplift families in the aftermath of this devastating storm.”
