CARE praised the recent remarks made by Dr. Anthony Fauci at the 148th Session of the World Health Organization Executive Board. His remarks signal that the U.S. will retract its intention to withdraw from the WHO and will participate in the critical COVAX and Access to Covid-19 Tools Accelerator (Act-Accelerator) programs to address COVID-19 and will imminently rescind the harmful Mexico City Policy (also known as the Global Gag Rule).
“In a time of unprecedented global health and economic challenges, the United States cannot afford to stay on the sidelines. We know that no one will be safe from COVID-19 until everyone is safe across the world. The Biden Administration’s prompt announcement of its intention to rejoin WHO and to play an active role in combatting COVID-19 globally is very welcome news,” said David Ray, CARE’s Vice President of Policy and Advocacy. “CARE further applauds the decision to repeal the dangerous Mexico City Policy imposed by the previous administration. This policy placed harmful and unnecessary restrictions on healthcare providers, patients, and implementers that had far reaching consequences on the health of women and girls around the world. Its imminent reversal is welcome news. CARE encourages President Biden to continue to prioritize the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and girls around the world.”
