WASHINGTON, DC (June 7, 2019) – On June 9-11, the leading international humanitarian and development organization CARE will host its 17thannual CARE National Conference (CNC), convening more than 100 citizen advocates, corporate partners and global development experts at George Washington University for three days of inspiration, learning and advocacy on behalf of poor women and girls worldwide.
CARE is specifically calling on conference participants to FIGHT WITH CARE® for U.S. foreign assistance and gender equality around the world.
“At this a time of unprecedented global challenges – including record levels of displacement, famine and conflict – the CARE National Conference provides an important platform for CARE supporters to move the needle on policies that will help save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice,” said Michelle Nunn, president and CEO of CARE. “We will use our voices to fight for, and lift up, women and girls and their families around the world and ensure real, measurable change happens.”
Key speakers at the conference include: President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, former President of Liberia and Nobel Laureate; Helene Cooper, Pentagon Correspondent for the New York Times, as well as CARE Ambassadors: Bellamy Young, “Scandal” actress; Holland Roden, “Teen Wolf” actress; Danielle Savre, “Station 19” actress; and Antonia Lofaso, chef, restaurant owner and TV personality.
Also during the conference, CARE’s Global Leaders Network (GLN) and the U.S. Institute of Peace (USIP) will honor José Andrés, Chef and Founder of World Central Kitchen; and Michèle Flournoy, former Under Secretary of Defense and co-founder of WestExecAdvisors, for their work to advance peace and prosperity around the world. Congressional honorees will include: Sen.Patty Murray (D-WA); Sen.Lisa Murkowski (R-AK); Sen. John Boozman (R-AR); Sen.Tim Kaine (D-VA); Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) and Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL). Also participating will be Ambassador Dina Kawar of Jordan; and former Sen. Sam Nunn, Chairman and Founder of the Nuclear Threat Initiative.
During the conference, CARE will also deliver the FIGHT WITH CARE® award to Ana Victoria López, the founder of Cooperativa AjSu’mR.L., the first women’s cooperative in Patzún Chimaltenango, Guatemala and Sandra Xiquín, the president of Cooperativa Integral Agricola Mujeres4pinos, a women’s agricultural cooperative in Santiago Sacatepéquez, Guatemala.
The three-day conference will culminate with a day of action, where conference participants will advocate on behalf of CARE’s priority issues in meetings with members of Congress and staffers on Capitol Hill.
