Reuters quoted Deepmala Mahla, CARE’s Asia regional director, on the unrecognized importance of toilets for women and girls. Regions without toilets put girls during menstruation at risk for sexual attacks from having to walk out into forested areas and girls must miss valuable school time. In addition toilets would help decrease the risk of disease from open defecation. “We can only be on the right track fully when we don’t look at the (toilet) issue in isolation. Our sanitation work needs to be more responsive to the need of women and girls.” Read more here.
