Arif Noor, CARE Myanmar Country Director, is quoted in the Washington Post on the impact of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday, March 28, killing at least 144 people. The quake’s epicenter was about 11 miles from Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-most-populous city. Deadly tremors felt all the way in Thailand.
This powerful quake struck a country already in crisis, with 19.9 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. This disaster has only worsened an already fragile situation. CARE and our partners are urgently assessing the damage and preparing to support affected communities.
All CARE staff in Myanmar are safe, but the earthquake has caused damage in Mandalay and nearby areas.
