Despite announcements, schools remain closed for high school girls in Afghanistan

Despite previous announcements that all schools for boys and girls would reopen on 23 March 2022, girls above grade 6 were sent home this morning, so the ban from school continues for them. Most schools closed after August 2021, and gradually reopened for boys in all grades, for girls up to grade 6, and for university students. But girls above grade 6 have been at home for nearly 8 months.

Bloomberg Philanthropies Partners with CARE to Support Women Small Business Owners in East Africa with Village Savings and Loans Associations

Dubai and New York – Bloomberg Philanthropies today announced a partnership with CARE to expand existing Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs) for agricultural funds in Tanzania, Rwanda, and Democratic Republic of the Congo. The partnership will enable women who own small agriculture-based businesses to build capital and access credit to invest in and grow their businesses, ensuring long-term economic sustainability for themselves and their families. VSLAs are member-driven community funds that encourage financial inclusion and independence by pooling resources and providing low interest rate loans. The partnership advances Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Women’s Economic Development Initiative, which has invested $65 million since 2007 in training opportunities for women internationally that build marketable skills across 12 vocational tracks in high-demand industries leading to economic independence for participants.

As cofounder and largest shareholder of MicroVest, CARE announced the sale of MicroVest to DAI Capital. In 2003 CARE and MEDA cofounded MicroVest to provide capital to Small Business banks and Microfinance banks in emerging and frontier markets that lend money primarily to, female unbanked and underbanked entrepreneurs. During the last 18 years, MicroVest has lent over one-billion dollars to over 200 banks and financial institutions in over 60 countries, who provided capital to over 10M borrowers.
