The New York Daily News published an op-ed from Heather Higginbottom, CARE’s chief operating officer. The op-ed began with words penned by Safiyo, an 11-year-old Somalian refugee who noted that her life in the Dadaab refugee camp is “better” than what she fled at home. An excerpt from the op-ed:
“Any life is better than what she saw in her home country. Sadly, Safiyo’s not alone.
On June 20, World Refugee Day, the United Nations is expected to release its official count of refugees and displaced people around the world. It will be a record number exceeding 65 million.
We all should find that figure as unacceptable as we find the conditions that create it — the famines and wars, the violence and natural disasters.”
