The Light the World Giving Machines kickoff season of giving in NYC

CARE and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints celebrate nearly 40 years of partnership, uplifting communities through shared compassion.

New York, December 3, 2024 – Just in time for Giving Tuesday, the Light the World Giving Machines returned to New York City, kicking off the holiday season with a vibrant community celebration, evening reception, and official unveiling in Times Square.

First introduced in 2017, these unique vending machines, created by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, provide a simple yet impactful way for people to support meaningful initiatives locally and globally during the most giving time of the year. With the swipe of a credit card and the push of a button, passersby can give back with the “purchase” from a selection of dozens of charitable items. When donors make their purchase, the Giving Machine dispenses a postcard featuring an image and description of their gift. 100% of all donations go directly to each participating charitable organization, as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints covers all expenses associated with the initiative, including credit card transaction fees.

During the kickoff celebration, representatives from CARE joined 15 other charitable organizations to showcase how donations through the Giving Machines will bring hope and transformative change to individuals and communities around the world, capturing the true spirit of the holidays.

“We are honored to be participating in the Light the World as a global partner this holiday season,” said Michelle Nunn, President and CEO of CARE. “Light the World is such a powerful initiative that demonstrates the profound impact of shared generosity. Each donation made to CARE amplifies positive change, creating waves of hope and opportunity. For nearly 40 years, CARE and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been working together to help families lift themselves out of poverty, and we are very grateful for this partnership.”

Since 1985, CARE and the Church have partnered to bring hope and opportunity to communities worldwide through the global CARE network. This lifesaving collaboration has supported countless families with emergency response efforts and essential health and nutrition programs. Together, CARE and the Church embody the spirit of the season, demonstrating how collective kindness can transform lives.
