The Atlanta Journal-Constitution featured an op-ed by Martha Brooks, CARE’s board chair, on her recent trip with CARE to Guatemala, seeing firsthand how U.S. assistance can improve lives in Central America and help stabilize the region. Brooks wrote of meeting a CARE program participant who went from living in extreme poverty to owning 12 fields. Guatemala faces a multitude of challenges, she wrote, with 16 million people living on less than $2 a day and half of children under 5 malnourished. But as Guatemala’s largest trading partner, the U.S. has the opportunity to help. “We must remind our leaders in Washington that addressing the root causes of a problem is the surest way to fix it,” Brooks wrote.
