PBS NewsHour published an extensive story on CARE’s “Suffering in Silence” report highlighting the 10 most underreported humanitarian crises of 2017.
It is hard to know why some conflicts gather more press attention than others, such as the Syria and Myanmar’s Rohingya refugee crisis, PBS NewsHour reported. The story also adds that CARE depends on local partners to reach people in need in places where government restrictions or logistics make it nearly impossible for foreign journalists and aid groups to go.
Sheba Crocker, CARE’s vice president of humanitarian programs and policy, is quoted in the article: “There are so many large scale humanitarian crises occurring at any given time and some of them barely break through to large scale public awareness,” she said.
