(Atlanta, Thursday March 31, 2022)CARE announced today that #LighttheWorld, a global campaign organized by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had raised more than $625,000 during the 2021 holiday season for CARE programs that fight hunger and provide life-saving resources.

CARE was one of several global humanitarian organizations that participated in #LighttheWorld, which ran from November 30th, 2021, through January 2022.  The initiative featured physical Giving Machines located in major cities around the U.S., that provided people an opportunity to purchase a gift to support those in need. Participants without a Giving Machine in their city had the option to donate online.

CARE’s Giving Machine items ranged in price from $5 to $250 and included chickens, a goat, a hand-washing station, emergency food, and a mother and newborn kit.  By far, the most popular CARE items were chickens and goats.

Through CARE programs in countries such as Sierra Leone and Benin, the donations will support food insecure families in raising livestock, helping improve nutrition and increase their household income through small businesses.  The eggs from chickens are a vital source of protein for children in the family, and the eggs can also be sold at the market.  Goat milk is also an important source of protein and goats, like chickens, can be raised and bred to create income for families.

CARE is proud of the success from this year’s Light the World Holiday initiative with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is such a privilege to be included with some of the most notable charities providing critical life-saving relief and support around the world. The Giving Machines are one of the most successful and generous ways to give in the spirit of the holidays and the original CARE packages, and we are so grateful to all the charities that came together in solidarity for all those in need.” Michelle Nunn, President & CEO, CARE USA.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints covered 100% of all expenses associated with the initiative, including credit card transaction fees to ensure every dollar reaches those that need it.
