The ready-made garment industry in Bangladesh makes up 13 percent of the country’s gross domestic product and has created jobs for more than 4 million workers, of which up to 85 percent are poorly educated women who are largely from rural areas, according to CARE. Vice.com traveled to one factory to see how a CARE program is working to challenge gender norms in a push for gender equality. Abu Taher, who heads up the program, explains, “We’ve done studies that show that women think they can’t be mothers and have their responsibilities in the home and also be leaders at work.
