WASHINGTON (Dec. 13, 2018) – CARE, the global humanitarian and development organization delivering assistance across Yemen, welcomes today’s bipartisan Senate vote on the War Powers Resolution, following the announcement of a negotiated ceasefire in Hodeidah.
David Ray, CARE USA’s Vice President for Policy and Advocacy, said:
“The strong, bipartisan Senate leadership on this issue sends a serious message that the U.S. role in Yemen’s man-made humanitarian crisis is unacceptable.
We applaud the efforts of the UN Special Envoy to bring parties to an agreement around many key humanitarian issues, including a ceasefire in Hodeidah. However, much remains to be done, as millions of Yemenis are still on the brink of starvation.
Today’s agreement happened through increasing pressure on all parties, including and especially, from Congress. We now look to the UN Security Council to add its strong and united support to the Hodeidah ceasefire announcement – reminding all parties that they must adhere to its terms and look to extend the ceasefire nationally. Only then will there be the potential for serious and credible peace negotiations and the kind of unfettered access we need to reach all Yemenis in need who have suffered disproportionately over the last three years.”
