ATLANTA (May 1, 2017) — The global poverty-fighting organization CARE today announced that it has named Bathsheba Crocker as its vice president of humanitarian action and policy.
In the newly created post, Crocker will oversee CARE’s global humanitarian profile, which is growing larger and more complex as the world’s humanitarian needs accelerate.
Crocker joins CARE with a track record of dynamic impact at both U.S. government and non-governmental organizations. Most recently, she served at the U.S. Department of State as Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs, leading the bureau that develops U.S. policy in the United Nations. She also served as Principal Deputy Director in the Office of Policy Planning and Chief of Staff to the Deputy Secretary of State.
Crocker designed and implemented international advocacy strategy at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, served in the United Nations’ peacebuilding support office and was a fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
“Sheba’s breadth of experience in global humanitarian crises is beyond impressive,” said Michelle Nunn, CARE’s president and chief executive officer. “We are confident that she will be a strategic asset to CARE as we strive to meet the world’s growing humanitarian needs.”
Last year, CARE worked in 94 countries and reached more than 80 million people, including 11.6 million people through its humanitarian work. That life-saving assistance and support for recovery and reconstruction after emergencies is a critical element of CARE’s overall program strategy, designed to help more than 200 million people overcome poverty and social injustice by 2020.
Crocker will drive the humanitarian piece of that strategy, providing leadership and strategic guidance for CARE USA’s emergency and humanitarian operations, programs, and policy. She will oversee humanitarian technical and operational support to CARE’s members and country offices, including emergency food aid programs. And she will manage strategic partnerships by identifying and building new alliances with peers, private sector actors, universities and relevant foundations.
“I’m thrilled to join CARE, which boasts such a rich history of providing humanitarian assistance,” said Crocker. “I’ve long been a fan of the organization and am excited to join the brave and dedicated teams working on the front lines of emergency responses around the world.”
CARE continues to scale up its responses to multiple humanitarian crises around the world. In the face of famine conditions simultaneously threatening 20 million people in South Sudan, Yemen, Nigeria and Somalia, CARE is providing food, nutrition and emergency cash assistance. Meanwhile, CARE is assisting Syrian refugees – the world’s largest refugee crisis since WWII – both inside the war-torn country and throughout the region.
Crocker begins June 12 and will be based in CARE’s Washington, D.C., office.
