CARE is assessing the needs in Pakistan after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake. The earthquake struck Thursday at 3 a.m. local time, while most people were asleep killing at least 20 people.
Statement by Adil Sheraz, CARE Pakistan Country Director:
“The powerful earthquake that struck Pakistan’s Balochistan province happened at the worst possible time – when people were asleep. We are very saddened by the reports of deaths, injuries and damage caused by the earthquake and worried that aftershocks could lead to further devastation. We are particularly concerned about the impact of the earthquake on vulnerable groups, including women and children. The Government of Pakistan has already started its response. CARE’s team is coordinating with provincial and district authorities about needs on ground.”
CARE Pakistan re-established operations in June 2005, after being out of the country for more than 25 years. CARE works in some of the most remote and logistically challenging areas of Pakistan to address the underlying causes of poverty, with special focus on women, children and the most marginalized people.
