June 24, 2024 – CARE and Save the Children today announced a new partnership to bring more urgent relief, including cash assistance, to vulnerable families affected by disasters in the U.S.
The new joint effort between these two leading global humanitarian organizations represents a shared commitment to supporting and empowering communities coping with the impact of climate disasters and other crises. The CARE/Save the Children partnership will advance their respective work, providing rapid response and critical humanitarian aid. It will do so by leveraging Save the Children’s existing community network across the U.S. – particularly in rural areas – to extend the reach of CARE’s domestic emergency relief and cash assistance program.
According to Michelle Nunn, CARE President & CEO, “CARE is tremendously excited to partner with Save the Children as we leverage our respective strengths in the wake of disasters. Our strength in cash assistance to women and families is complementary to Save’s focus on protecting and uplifting children. We look forward to amplifying each other’s impact where need is greatest.”
“Children are always among the most vulnerable during natural disasters, and Save the Children is dedicated to supporting the long-term recovery of America’s kids in the aftermath of emergencies,” said Betsy Zorio, vice president of Save the Children’s U.S. Programs. “We are grateful to collaborate with CARE to collectively bolster our ability to meet the critical needs of children and their families when disaster strikes.”
Currently working in 109 countries globally, CARE brings nearly eight decades of experience delivering humanitarian and development assistance to the world’s most vulnerable populations, with a focus on women and girls. At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, CARE established emergency relief programs in the US, and has since funded local partners after multiple domestic disasters, including Hurricanes Ian and Idalia in Florida, and tornadoes in the Midwest and Kentucky. As part of this work in the US, CARE provides cash assistance – to pay for things like water, food, basic supplies, and housing – as well as health and wellness resources for women and young girls.
Save the Children has been protecting children in emergencies around the world for over 100 years, focusing on kids’ well-being during and after disasters – and ensuring their long-term recovery. The global nonprofit works with partners to meet families’ most urgent needs after disaster strikes in the U.S. – providing essential child-focused supplies – and helps children return to learning and recover from emotional trauma. Save the Children offers funding, supplies and learning materials so schools and child care centers can reopen, and increased access to mental health supports so families can cope with long-term distress. It also works in hundreds of America’s most impoverished, rural communities every day to ensure kids are getting the early learning and educational support they need to thrive as learners and in life.
This announcement comes in advance of the start of what experts from the Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project have projected to be an “extremely active” 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, with well above-average activity expected. The season, running from June 1 to November 30, is anticipated to witness heightened hurricane activity, particularly from mid-August to mid-October, with a peak in mid-September.
