Atlanta, Ga. (November 2, 2023) – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation announced Cargill, in partnership with CARE, as a winner of the 2023 Citizens Awards, a long-standing program that honors purpose-driven businesses for their leadership in solving the world’s biggest challenges. Cargill and CARE were nominated for the Best Economic Opportunity and Empowerment Program category.
“CARE is deeply honored to be recognized by the U.S. Chamber Foundation for our longstanding partnership with Cargill,” said Michelle Nunn, President and CEO of CARE USA. “The Citizen Award for Economic Opportunity and Empowerment highlights CARE and Cargill’s work together to promote a more sustainable and food secure world. Together, we are ensuring women, who are disproportionately impacted by hunger and poverty, and their families have access to the resources they need. This includes water, financing, training, and nutritious food, so they can lead healthy and more prosperous lives.”
For over two decades, this annual awards program has recognized the most innovative and impactful corporate citizenship initiatives that leverage a company’s talent, resources, and expertise to improve communities.
“Cargill, a leading company in food and agriculture, partners with CARE, a leading humanitarian organization, to implement PROSPER (Promoting a Sustainable and Food Secure World), a program tackling food and nutrition insecurity, and gender inequality. Since 1958, Cargill and CARE have worked together to support global food security challenges. PROSPER was informed by CARE’s 75 years of experience, Cargill’s deep knowledge of the food system, and 34 projects CARE and Cargill have implemented together across 13 countries. PROSPER’s success is attributed to the unique contributions of each partner, as well as their overlapping global presence and shared value and commitment to socially responsible business. Critical to PROSPER’s design is ensuring communities themselves participate in developing bespoke solutions that tackle the challenges they face.
“Building resilient agricultural supply chains is at the core of our work at Cargill, and we know women play a critical role in driving the long-term change needed to strengthen the food system. In partnership with CARE for over 60 years we have been dedicated to improving the lives and economic development of smallholder farmers and entrepreneurs focusing on women,” said Michelle Grogg, Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at Cargill. “We are honored to be recognized by the U.S. Chamber Foundation for this transformational work.”
2023 Citizens Awards winners were recognized during the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s Business Solves Conference on November 1-2, 2023, in Washington, D.C.
