Impact Magazine: Issue 31

In a world full of enormous challenges that headline our news every day, I am inspired to share some stories of the incredible impact that our dedicated CARE colleagues and partners, with your generosity, are making possible.

In this issue you can read about how:

  • She Feeds the World, our guiding framework for food and water systems programming, is battling lethal malnutrition and hunger by helping women and youth in more than 40 countries build skills and confidence in sustainable agriculture practices, market engagement, gender equality, and food and nutrition security.
  • CARE’s advocacy helped lead to guidelines to protect the lives and livelihoods of more than 1.3 billion food-production workers.
  • CARE and partners helped a 15-year-old in Nepal make up for several lost school years and move toward her dream of becoming a teacher.

We are also:

  • Tackling the digital divide in Somalia with a new voice- identification-verification system that ensures that crucial cash assistance gets quickly to the people who need it.
  • Helping women in rural Bangladesh set up sustainable homestead gardens and connecting them to commercial markets to feed their families and their incomes.
  • Supporting indigenous women in Guatemala in collaborative beekeeping to generate income and increase their resilience to climate change.

I feel fortunate to see so many of these stories first-hand. In May, I joined CARE leaders from around the world in Dar es Salaam, a location that reflected our extraordinary partnerships with Tanzania’s national government and local civil society organizations, and our shared goals around the empowerment of women and girls.

We saw how CARE Tanzania’s work goes back 30 years and today includes support for innovative programs in education, health, financial inclusion, agriculture, and climate resilience across most of the country’s regions. And we saw how CARE’s response in Tanzania through our Humanitarian Surge Fund helped us deliver water and hygiene supplies to more than 900 people following devastating flooding and mudslides. I met young people who were receiving CARE vocational training and declared their intent to become the most successful tailors and chefs in all of the country.

This is what hope looks like, and your support makes it possible every day. At CARE, we live, learn, and share these stories every day. There is no greater antidote against despair.

Thank you for all you do to stand with CARE around the world.
