Even though Rogelys Carmona had a steady job in Venezuela, she still couldn’t afford to feed her four children. The country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis — a dire mix of political instability, hunger, inflation, poverty, and skyrocketing crime rates — has caused Rogelys and 4 million other Venezuelans to make the difficult decision to flee the country. Rogelys and her four children traveled through Colombia to Ecuador and settled in Huaquillas on the border with Peru. While the move and settling in to their new home has been difficult, Rogelys has found solidarity and support from an unlikely source — WhatsApp groups.
