Three new members hail from customer development, traditional media, digital media
ATLANTA (October 3, 2017) — The global poverty-fighting organization CARE today named three directors to its board, in a move aimed at broadening its impact and amplifying its voice.
Everett Harper, Tessa Lyons-Laing and Richard Stengel join CARE’s board, increasing the number of directors to 19. The newly expanded board will convene this week at CARE’s downtown-Atlanta headquarters for its quarterly meeting.
Harper is the CEO and co-founder of Truss: Infrastructuralists, a San Francisco-based technology company that builds software infrastructure to solve complex challenges of growth and transformation. His expertise is in customer development, combining behavior research and ethnography to define winning products and services.
Lyons-Laing is a product manager at Facebook. She was previously business lead to Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg. She started her career as a management consultant with McKinsey & Company, where she focused on technology and media.
Stengel is a strategic advisor at Snapchat. He previously served as Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs in the Obama Administration. Before entering government, he was the longtime managing editor of TIME.
“We are excited for the energy and next-generation thinking that these new directors will bring to bolster CARE’s work and take it to the next level,” said Michelle Nunn, president and CEO of CARE. “They each bring a unique perspective and skill set that will help CARE further our overall program strategy, designed to help more than 200 million people overcome poverty and social injustice by 2020.”
Harper, for example, honed his customer development skills as director of customer acquisition and community at Linden Lab (maker of the virtual world Second Life.) He also led Truss as part of the technology surge team that helped fix Healthcare.gov.
“I’m thrilled to become a director at an organization that I’ve long admired,” Harper said.
Lyons-Laing echoed that sentiment. Prior to Facebook, she worked at LeanIn.Org, a global community committed to empowering all women to achieve their ambitions. “I’m particularly proud to join the directorship of an organization known for innovative work to improve the lives of women and girls around the world.”
Stengel, who is also the author of several books, also collaborated with Nelson Mandela on the South African’s autobiography. He is eager to bring his expertise in both new and traditional media to help increase CARE’s public profile.
“CARE has such a compelling story to tell as it tackles some of the largest humanitarian challenges of our time,” Stengel said. “I want to help CARE tell that story.”
