ATLANTA (April 30, 2013) – – Atlanta-based CARE, one of the worlds leading humanitarian organizations, is bringing a global movement to educate girls to its own backyard next month with a free screening of the widely anticipated film Girl Rising in Midtown. Moviegoers can see the film at the Midtown Art Cinema on May 13, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. and, afterward, enjoy an inspiring discussion that includes a producer of the film.
Girl Rising spotlights the stories of nine unforgettable girls around the world, striving beyond circumstance and overcoming impossible odds to achieve their dreams of education. The filmis at the center of 10×10 a global campaign to educate and empower girls around the world. As a global poverty fighting organization that works alongside poor girls and women, CARE shares 10x10s commitment to girls education and helped to provide content for the film.
Moviegoers will meet Senna, a 14-year-old girl from an unforgiving mining town in Peru, who at the insistence of her father stays in school, finding her voice and her future. Today Senna goes to a CARE-supported secondary school. She plans on attending university and studying to become an engineer, a lawyer or perhaps even a poet.
Its no surprise that education lags in Sennas Puno province, where nearly 68 percent of the population lives below the poverty line and 30 percent survive in extreme poverty. Many parents have no choice but to enlist the help of their children, consequently preventing them from attending school. In Sennas village CARE launched a project in 2003 designed to educate residents about the need to eliminate child labor for illegal gold mining and get more children enrolled in the formal education system.
Senna shows us what CARE sees all over the world: the power of educating a girl, said Dr. Helene Gayle, president and CEO of CARE. It is thrilling to be a part of 10×10 and give our hometown of Atlanta an inside look at the global movement to make sure girls have a chance to go to school.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Gayle, Lisa Borders, president of the Grady Health Foundation and recently appointed vice president of Global Community Connections for The Coca-Cola Company and Chair of The Coca Cola Foundation and Martha Adams, a producer of Girl Rising.
The stories of the girls in Girls Rising are important because these girls hold our future in their hands, said Martha Adams. If they, and the millions of girls like them, succeed in getting the kind of education they need, incredible things will happen. For them, for their families. For their communities. For their countries. For all of us.
