Statement by Deepmala Mahla, CARE USA, Vice President of Humanitarian Affairs
“CARE calls for a peaceful resolution of the current situation in Niger. The country is already experiencing the converging effects of climate change, conflict, and rising food prices. As a result of these factors, more than 4.3 million Nigeriens rely on humanitarian aid to survive, 361,000 of whom are internally displaced. 2.9 million face severe food insecurity. A deteriorating security context in the country and continued sanctions will have dire consequences for the population, especially the most vulnerable. Women and girls are especially at risk. The population of Niger cannot afford to see living conditions worsen.”
