July 26, 2023, Washington, D.C.:
Last week, the Senate Appropriations Committee passed its FY24 State and Foreign Operations (SFOPS) bill, which includes funding for critical U.S. foreign assistance. In response, CARE Vice President of U.S. Programs and Policy Ritu Sharma said:
“CARE is encouraged by the Senate Appropriations Committee’s passage of an FY24 State and Foreign Operations (SFOPS) bill that brings topline funding much closer to FY23 levels. Going forward, we urge bipartisan, bicameral action to ensure that a final deal on SFOPS funding is fully up to FY23 levels at a bare minimum. Global needs still far outpace current funding. A retreat from our support of vital programs to respond to unprecedented levels of need would mean a devastating loss of lifesaving food, girls going to school, mothers delivering babies safely, and other crucial interventions. The US leadership role in humanitarian response and long-term development has been sustained for decades by steadfast, principled, and bipartisan support in Congress, and we look forward to continuing to work with champions on both sides of the aisle to ensure this continues.”
