In a recent report, UN agencies issued a dire warning that in the next few months acute food insecurity is likely to worsen in 22 countries around the world.
CARE and other local and international NGOs have been witnessing the catastrophic impacts of this historic crisis firsthand for years now. This emergency—brought on by the confluence of climate change, conflict, rising prices, and the impacts of COVID—jeopardizes the future of so many, especially women and girls. The worsening crisis in the Sahel, the conflict in Sudan, and the expected impact of El Nino are among the factors that will make food harder to come by for millions more around the world.
As the crisis deteriorates, the will of the international community to address it remains anemic, as evidenced by last week’s Horn of Africa Pledging Conference, during which donors only pledged $2.4 billion of the $7 billion needed to meet the immediate needs of those affected.
Humanitarian funding is a matter of life and death. We cannot take our eyes off the hunger crisis before us and must take decisive action to end it and prevent future ones.
