As part of her membership in a CARE Village Savings and Loan Association, 15-year-old Halima Mohammed sold bracelets, beaded jewelry and soaps. She and her friends in Nairobi’s Kibera slum, used the proceeds to buy sanitary napkins so they wouldn’t have to miss school during menstruation. The girls named their group, “Mashujaa, a Swahili word for “heroes” and their story of group savings is nothing short of heroic.
