Huffington Post: What to do for Refugees? Start With a Message of Hope

Michelle Nunn on the Syrian border
Michelle Nunn on the Syrian border

In a Huffington Post blog, Michelle Nunn, president and CEO of CARE, urges people to send Syrian refugees a message of hope, as the war drags into its sixth year.  Her call came amid a similar outpouring of support from former WWII refugees who sent letters of encouragement to Syrian refugee children at CARE’s request. “On this somber anniversary, we need to begin by truly standing with the people of Syria in recognition of their suffering,” Nunn wrote. She added that when talking with Syrian refugees on the border last summer, she was struck by what she repeatedly heard and was articulated by a Syrian doctor, a refugee, who is now serving in cross-border medical missions: “The Syrian people need to see some message of hope from the world.”

Women, Work, and War: Research Study

Five years of war and displacement have triggered fundamental shifts in gender roles and responsibilities, both in Syria and in neighboring countries. In Syria before the crisis, women’s economic participation was relatively low at 22 percent in 2010, with some legal barriers but mainly sociocultural norms and practice limiting women’s roles and responsibilities inside and outside the house. As a result of the upheaval, however, Syrian women and men feel that their roles and responsibilities have been reversed: while women increasingly participate in decision-making on income and expenses and assume responsibilities outside the home, men have lost their traditional role as the sole breadwinner and decision-maker.
