Relief Efforts in Vanuatu

Consisting of 83 islands, Vanuatu is highly vulnerable to natural disasters including earthquakes and tropical storms. CARE started working here in 2008, with a focus on helping communities prepare for emergencies – such as Cyclone Pam in 2015.

Communities in Vanuatu have limited capacity to rebuild when disasters strike. CARE helps them develop sustainable emergency preparedness plans, and gain the skills and knowledge they need to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters – and to rebuild afterwards. We also work with local organizations, other NGOs and government bodies to ensure they can give communities the support they need.

CARE also works to strengthen the leadership, capacity and coordination of civil society and government actors in Vanuatu to more effectively work towards the promotion of gender equality and the elimination of violence against women and girls. Communities in Vanuatu are also experiencing better health outcomes through piloting a community-centered accountability model for the health sector through engagement of communities and use of digital media.
